Touring Suncheon

Suncheon Open Filming Location

Suncheon Open Film Location

Suncheon Open Filming Location is a must for fans of Korean dramas and films, especially those set in the recent past. The film set is a faithful recreation of city life in Korea during the 1950s-1970s, and has appeared in many movies to date. You can choose the standard tour course or make your trip more eventful by participating in activities. The set is largely divided into the three sections of downtown Suncheon, Seoul’s Byeondu-ri neighborhood, and Bongcheon-dong Moon Village on the hilltop. The filming set also serves popular snacks like jeon (pancakes) and makgeoli (rice wine) if you’re feeling hungry as you tour.

Tip) Recommended courses

Because the filming set is so large, it’s a good idea to plan before visiting.

Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve

Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve

The highlight of Suncheon is rightly Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve. The bay is the perfect example of how nature and people can fit together beautifully and mutually beneficially. A simple walk along the wooden decks placed throughout the fields of reeds is all it takes to feel a sense of peace with the world. The reeds are also the perfect backdrop for photos!

In addition to the walking paths, you can also learn about the local ecosystem at Suncheon Bay Eco-Museum. Bird watch in the day or view stars at the Observatory at night, and take in the perfectly curvy stream from Yongsan Observation Deck. For mementos, don’t forget to stop by the Craft & Local Products Hall before leaving.

Eating & Shopping in Suncheon

Kkomak jeongsik

Kkomak & ganjang gejang

Suncheon has a very pure environment, which is evidenced by the quality of seasonal ingredients used in the food here. The best way to taste what Suncheon has to offer is by trying a set meal, such as kkomak jeongsik (set meal with cockles). This meal comes with both cockles and sweet ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crabs).

Jjangttungeo tang

Jjangttungeo tang

Jjangddungeo (mudskippers) can easily be found in mudflats with a clean environment, and are commonly eaten in the southern regions of Korea. One of the most common dishes using this fish is jjangddeungeo tang (spicy mudskipper stew). The dish is prepared by boiling mudskippers to broth before adding soybean paste, chili peppers, leeks, and summer squash. This dish is a must when visiting Suncheon, and can be made spicier by adding Cheongyang chili peppers, considered the hottest peppers grown in Korea.

Signature Suncheon gifts

Mudskipper ocarina (top, credit: Studio Mud & Fire, Jirisan Story), goods from Simda Books (left, credit: Samda Books) & fresh strawberry mochi (right)

The best way to remember a special trip is through unique souvenirs that can only be found in that location. For Suncheon, this can be best represented through the mudskipper and hooded crane ocarinas created by Studio Mud & Fire, Jirisan Story. The mudskipper ocarina is faithfully crafted to resemble a real mudskipper, even down to the size. The hooded crane ocarina is designed with the coloring of these local birds. Both ocarinas can be found at Studio Mud & Fire, Jirisan Story, as well as at gift shops of major attractions such as Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve and Naganeupseong Folk Village. For special foods, pick up a box of Suncheon’s signature snack, chewy chapssal tteok (sticky rice cakes). Suncheon Ttalgi Mochi has hooded crane chapssal tteok as well as fresh strawberry mochi.

For special items created by local artists, head to Simda Books, a locally operated bookshop at Yeokjeon Market in front of Suncheon Station. Popular gift items found here include photo postcards and candles. The candles in particular make wonderful mementos, imprinted with scenes of the beauty found at Suncheonman Bay National Garden. Another shop that is currently trending is Yuikan Shop, meaning useful shop in Korean. This store sells fair-trade and upcycled items in an effort to improve lives and the environment. If you prefer shopping like a local, visit the markets and grocers to pick up regional products such as crab and mudskipper bread, laver chips, bay salt, and more.
