Themed Dreams of the Flying Horse, the Gyeongju World Culture Expo strives to marry the folklore and mythologies of ancient cultures with attention-grabbing digital technologies of future generations, in one spectacular 2½ month-long festival known as the Gyeongju World Culture Expo. Scheduled for August 13 – October 23, 2003, this celebration of cultures will bring together exhibits, live performances, cuisine, animation and feature films of cultures around the world.

Several exhibition halls are the highlight of the festival, including the Cultural Images Exhibition hall, which focuses on cultural loss and restoration, with a particular emphasis of now extinct global cultures. The Oriental Culture Hall demonstrates the importance of the Silk Road on Gyeongju’s ancient Silla Dynasty. A third exhibition, World Football Cultures will demonstrate the cultures and football history of the 32 countries that played in the 2002 World Cup. Children have their own special areas, and in particular will enjoy the popular DOR dance machines in the Cyber Character Hall, and the interactive computer games designed specifically to incorporate the Korea’s ancient dynasties, in the Computer Games Hall. Also popular among visitors will be the live performances, which include a world puppet drama, a marching band competition, and traditional Korean music. The virtual reality component of the Expo offers an exhibit of floating four-dimensional images, as well as the largest virtual reality theater in the world, which will display scenes from the ancient Silla Dynasty.

Known as Korea’s “museum without walls,” Gyeongju was the capital of the Shilla Kingdom from 57 BC to 935 AD, and served as a major stop on the Silk Road. It is believed that Korean Buddhism originated here making the adjacent area rich with relief paintings, stone pagodas and carvings. Several locations have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
