Bunjae Artpia Offers Tranquil Paradise Retreat on Jeju Island
The only park in Korea to specialize in potted and garden plants, the Bunjae Artpia is located on Jeju Island and is the largest park of its kind in the world. The tranquil island retreat, which features a harmonious blend of waterfalls, ponds and scenic pathways, contains more than 1,000 rotating plant specimens and displays more than 700 of them on a daily basis. Built on a former “wasteland of thorny trees and shrubs,” owner Bum-Young Sung opened the Bunjae Artpia in July 30, 1992 so that he could revive the disappearing 700-year-old Bunjae culture. Similar to Japanese Bonsai, Bunjae is a scaled down version of living trees and other plants, which usually grow in tandem with the four seasons, often flowering in early spring and becoming tinged with red and gold in autumn. For more information, view the website at www.bunjaeartpia.com, currently in Korea only, but an English version is in the works, or contact the KNTO at 800/868-7567.
