(Fort Lee, NJ) – The Chunhyang Festival takes place from May 4 to May 9 at various locations throughout Namwon, Jeonrabuk-do Province including Gwanghalluwon. The festival received its name from Chunhyang, the heroine in a Joseonera novel who typifies a Korean woman’s integrity, fidelity and love. The Festival honors her through a ceremony and holds the Chunhyang Selection Contest, Chunhyang Classical Music Contest, Ssireum (wrestling), Swinging Contest, and National Pansori Contest (Traditional Korean Opera).

With flourishing fanfare, this festival calls together tourists from all around the world to enjoy indigenous culture and arts productions, including Pansori Chunhyang-jeon, the lengthy epic solo song describing the life of Chunhyang. The Chunhyang Beauty Contest with the contestants adorned in traditional attire is the climax of the festival.
