Mud make-up, mud bathing and mud therapy are just a few participatory events that help restore the skin’s vitality according to organizers of the annual Boryeong Mud Festival, scheduled for July 16-22, 2004. A distinct type of mud found exclusively at Daecheon Beach, the largest beach resort on Korea’s west coast, is known throughout Korea for its restorative qualities. This mud, which can only be found along an 8-mile tidal flat located along the water’s edge in the city of Boryeong reportedly radiates long infrared rays and is especially rich in germanium and other minerals. Boryeong mudpacks are popular skin care products, and are believed to stimulate circulation, slow aging and ease arthritis, wrinkles and contusions. The annual festival provides many opportunities to experience the restorative qualities of the area’s mud and mud bathing, mud massage, and mud sculpting are just a few of the more popular events. Traditional cultural performances, including classical music concerts and shaman rituals round out the festivities.

Year-round Daecheon Harbor, located less than a mile north of the beach, is a hub for a water transportation network that connects more than 70 adjacent islands. Five or six times a year the waterway splits open between two adjacent islands, revealing the Muchangpo Fantasy Sea Path. Mud is the star of the area’s commerce and the most renowned local products are mud makeup. For more information about the Boryeong Mud Festival, visit the KNTO website at www.mudfestival.or.kr
