(Fort Lee, NJ) – Exhibitions, festivals, performances, events and theme tours all combine to make the 5th Gwangju Biennale a must event for art lovers, educational groups and other visitors to Korea.

The Gwangju Biennale has been at the forefront of bringing attention to world social issues through art. This year it proposes alternatives for producing and sharing creative cultural values and establishes an exhibition culture with a new way of communication, by inviting Viewer-Participants to collaborate with artists in the production of artworks.

The 2004 theme: ‘A Grain of Dust, A Drop of Water’ is a vital natural phenomenon and ecological interpretation of order describing the cycle of creation and extinction. Dust suggests noise and cries, covers the objects of our conspicuous consumption that are remains of our industrial society. A drop of water suggests the medium of creation, animates the inanimate thus allowing the cycle of life. Dust, together with water, heals the negative elements of the contemporary society, thus revitalizing the new cultural and aesthetics values in the present world.

The 5th Gwangju Biennale opens on September 10 and runs through November 13, 2004.

Gwangju, truly a City of Art, is a central city in the southern region of Korea that takes great pride in its harmonization of the unique flavors of its cuisine and incomparable taste in art.

Christened the City of Light from ancient times, Gwangju has always been in the vanguard of culture and art, leading the way for the southern culture of Korea.

The delightful cuisine of the southern region is a reflection of the distinguished taste and generosity of the region.

The streets that served as the tragic scene of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980, Chungjang-ro and Geumnam-ro, are now thriving with the vivacious pursuits of the youth.

Throbbing with tradition, the City of Light is host of many international major cultural festivals including the Gwangju Biennale, and Gwangju Kimchi Festival (October 19-24), Gwangju International Film Festival (September 2-11), International Folklore Festival (October 2-10) plus many more in 2004.
