These mushrooms thrive on the granite soil of this extension of the Baekdu Range. Yangyang County is located just at the foot of the scenic Mt. Seorak, famous for its fall foliage. Hosted for the 10th time, this year, the Pine Mushroom Festival offers a bevy of activities related to the famous local crop: harvesting mushrooms, treasure hunt, pine mushroom dish tasting. Visitors also appreciate the opportunity to try out the traditional lifestyle of Korean farming communities: ox cart riding, cooking and tasting local specialty dishes, pulling fish net and preparing rice cakes. The festival runs from September 28 through October 4. To participate in the mushroom harvesting (Sep. 20-Oct. 7), guests need to sign up ahead of time. Details on how to sign up for the program are available at the county website. http://www.yangyang.gangwon.kr/htmlfunc/eng/index.html
