Seoul’s ice skating rinks serve as a low cost getaway.
Foreigners are attracted to Seoul’s three largest ice skating rinks as places to spend quality time with each other and to have fun. Seoul City Plaza’s ice skating rink attracts three thousand people daily. The ice rink was introduced to the public in 2004. For one dollar, a skater can enjoy a pair of skates, safety equipment and two hours of rink access. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (till Feb. 19). Skaters who prefer a view of the Han River and Gangnam while they skate can check out the Grand Hyatt Hotel’s ice rink. This rink has been the sight of many Television dramas and commercials due to its romantic atmosphere at night. Couples receive a 50 percent discount on Mondays, and they can rent skates for free from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday’s. On Fridays, patrons can rent the entire ice rink from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. where they can propose or have a private party with friends. The cost to skate at this rink is relatively low. The third ice skating rink that is also popular in Seoul is located at the Sheraton Walkerhill Hotel. “The hotel opened an ice rink for the first time this year under the theme of Alice in Wonderland. The rink also caters to couples with 2,000 small lights and romantic music.” Similar to that of the Grand Hyatt Hotel, couples looking to get engaged can rent the entire rink for one hour for a romantic proposal. The entrance fee is $20 and the cost for skate rentals is $10. The hotel is centrally located near Gangbyeon Station on Subway Line 2.
