11th World Fire-Fighter Games 2010 In Daegu, Korea (23-30 Aug.)

In March 2007
the governing body of the ‘World Fire-Fighter Games’ selected Daegu as their
host city in 2010 and organisers are extending an invitation to all UK based
fire-fighters to join them at the World Fire-fighter Games in August this year.
The Games which are held every two years attract fire-fighters from all over the
world to compete in an Olympics style event especially for
fire-fighters.
The World Fire-fighters Games will be held in Daegu, Korea
from the 23rd-30th August with 5,000 participants from 40 countries are expected
to compete in 61 events. Current and retired fire-fighters and their families
can compete in the Games. The Games were held last year in Liverpool, UK. The
first World Fire-fighter Games were held in New Zealand in 1990 and have grown
in importance ever since.
In Daegu fire-fighters will compete in 61
events including a wide range of sports - archery, swimming, athletics, tennis,
dragon boat racing, marathon, a fire truck challenge and the highlight event,
the toughest fire-fighter alive. Korean sports such as taekwondo, ssi-reum
(Korean wrestling) feature in the Games as well.
Daegu is the third
largest city in Korea, which inherits the once glorious culture of Gaya and
Silla and boasts 5,000 years of history. It has less rainfall than other areas
of Korea, courtesy of being situated in a basin surrounded by beautiful
mountains. Daegu is becoming internationally recognized as a sports city having
hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Daegu Athletics meeting 2005/ 2006 and is
hosting the World Athletics Championships in 2011.
