Korea
has been named 'Asia's Leading Sports Tourism Destination' at the 2012 World
Travel Awards in Singapore.
Korea
has emerged as a leading force in the ‘Sports Tourism’ arena and the award caps
another wonderful year. A year in which our destination’s awareness reached new
heights during the London Olympics, showcasing Korean Culture at Saatchi
Gallery, hosting a K-Pop singing and dance competition, advertising on the world
famous Piccadilly lights and through the achievements of our athletes – 5th
in the Medal table. We are very excited that the Olympic flame will land in
Korea once again for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and another
opportunity to attract and host the biggest events in the world.
The
London office of Korea Tourism Organization has pushed forward many initiatives
to harness Korea’s ‘Sports Tourism’ potential; these have included a
partnership with GB Taekwondo over the last couple of years and the publication
of a bespoke sport tourism supplement that was picked up by the global travel
media.
Ramy
Salameh, PR Manager of Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) said ‘Korea has hosted
pretty much all the biggest sporting festivals the world has to offer and each
one has created their own lasting legacy and the award is confirmation of our
continued successes’.
Next
year we look forward to hosting the Pyeongchang Special Olympics, World Rowing
Championships, the opening of a new Taekwondo Park in Muju and the Suncheon
Garden Expo, so we welcome you to come and ‘recharge your energy’ in Korea.
