Following last year’s Gold Medal success at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for Korea’s De-Militarised Zone (DMZ) Garden, the Korea Tourism Organisation will be taking a stand at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show to promote garden tours to Korea and the Suncheon Bay Garden Expo. The Expo is sanctioned by the Association of International Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and this is the first time they have chosen Korea for such an event. The Expo runs until Oct.20, 2013 after which the site will remain as a park and conservation area, most notably for the Suncheon Bay wetlands which are deemed to be one of the most ecologically significant in the world.

The 2012 DMZ Garden at Chelsea was designed by Hwang Ji-Hae, Korea’s best-known garden designer and her latest design will feature at the Suncheon Bay Garden Expo. Hwang’s design is for a garden called The Lugworm’s Path. The lugworm is a tiny, often overlooked creature, but is an indispensable part of the mudflat ecosystem. The lugworm is the first line of defence against pollutants in the mudflats, for which Suncheon Bay is famous.

There are two more links with the world of UK horticulture and landscaping – the Suncheon Lake Garden, a central focal point, designed by Charles Jencks, and the British Garden, designed by Andy Sturgeon and based on his Best in Show Garden at the 2010 Chelsea Flower Show.

Other garden attractions in Korea include The Garden of Morning Calm

Emerald Travel, who have created special garden tours of Korea which also include the Suncheon Garden Expo, will also be on hand at the KTO stand (E200) at Hampton Court to promote their tour.
