Korea is making a bid to host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in the Gangwon Winter Sports Belt, which enjoys superb winter conditions such as abundant high-quality snow and clear weather ideal for outdoor winter sports.

The selection results will be announced at the 115th International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) session in Prague, Czechoslovakia on 2 July 2003.

Plans have been submitted periodically to the IOC since 31 January 2002, and the IOC had made an evaluation visit to the candidate city, PyeongChang in February 2003.

Gangwon Winter Sports Belt also features other world-class ski resorts and ice-skating facilities in nearby cities of Gangneung and Wonju.

Although boasting clean forested mountains and virtually unpolluted, all the sport venues are nevertheless conveniently located minutes away from major expressways and local highways. Travelling time between venues is within an hour’s drive, while PyeongChang is accessible via a two hours’ drive from Seoul.

The entire Sports Belt has a total of 68 ski slopes and 26 ski courses, with new facilities for ski jump, luge and bobsleigh events in the pipeline.

Improvements will also be made to the existing expressways and highways to increase accessibility to the area. The current international airport in Gangwondo, Yangyang International Airport will also connect domestic flights as international ones from Tokyo, Bangkok and other Asian cities.
